Michelle pokes fun at this, and maybe she has a point. I may be a liberal, but this seems like a quarter-baked idea at best.

But phrases like "pushover generation" and "a nation of namby-pambys"? That seems fairly naive for a woman (or Jesse?) whose child is nearing school age. As Ace of Spades says:

Losing a leg might be "character building," but most would prefer to keep their current complement of limbs rather than gain some character, and most kids would rather live their lives without ridicule and beatings than "learn to toughen up."

No such common sense from Malkin. I hope she doesn't have to learn the hard way how damaging bullies can be to a child.

And no, I'm not speaking from any particular experience, although I did take my share of heat for wearing glasses. But I've seen worse, and it scares me for my son. It's important to learn to stand up to bullies, but that doesn't mean that we should treat efforts to reduce bullying as efforts to wussify our kids.

I think I could write a whole book on logical fallacies using the Malkins as an example. This one was tough; however, I think it most resembles this one.

If no cheetos is torture, then torture occurred at Gitmo.
No cheetos is not torture.
Therefore, torture did not occur at Gitmo.

Any logicians out there concur?

Liberal Avenger calls my attention to this op-ed by Sen. John Danforth, former R-Mo.

When, on television, we see a person in a persistent vegetative state, one who will never recover, we believe that allowing the natural and merciful end to her ordeal is more loving than imposing government power to keep her hooked up to a feeding tube.

When we see an opportunity to save our neighbors' lives through stem cell research, we believe that it is our duty to pursue that research, and to oppose legislation that would impede us from doing so...

Durbin watch? Really?

Just received this e-mail from Steve Gill:

Vice President Dick Cheney appeared this morning on Steve Gill Mornings in Nashville, Tennessee and was asked about Dick Durbin's comparison of U.S. troops at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis. The Vice President noted that he had to be "careful about what I say since this is a family show" but that the "comparison is one of the more egregious things I've heard on the floor of the U.S. Senate."

Not necessarily one of the most egregious things you've said on the floor of the Senate, though, Dick.

Maybe if Dickie spent less time twisting Durbin's words and more time considering the truth of them - as actually spoken - we'd be able to make some progress towards rebuilding America's image.

She also quotes an LA Times op-ed:

...If you are proud of this country and don't want its identity to vanish, you must teach U.S. history to your children. They won't learn it in school. This nation's memory will go blank unless you act.

Unfortunately, under George W. Bush's administration, the United States' moral authority is rapidly becoming just that - history. And that's not Dick Durbin's fault.

Pretty sure I'm one of the gloaters Malkin is referring to. So be it. All I can say is that reading a staunch supporter of the Iraq war accuse someone else of having disdain for the sanctity of life is comical.

Oh, and apparently "no evidence of" is synonymous for "proof of" in Malkin's mind.

The question is, "Who believes anything the administration says about torture?".

Also, M.C.'s descriptions "match accounts" given by others. That simply means that some of M.C.'s claims resemble claims of other detainees--a far cry from "corroboration" don't ya think?

No, not really. In fact, it's kind of the definition of "corroboration."

There is simply no way that interrogators and guards would subject a young boy to harsher treatment than a high-value detainee like al-Qatani whose interrogation methods had to be personally approved by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

When I sleep, I dream that even the Malkins will recognize that absolutist, common-sense statements like the one above are inoperative under this administration.
